What Is a Bikini Beach?

3 min read · The Maldives Guide

If you're planning a guesthouse trip, you'll see this term everywhere — and it's simpler than it sounds.

The short explanation

A "bikini beach" is a designated, usually fenced-off section of a local island's beach where tourists are free to wear swimwear — bikinis, swim trunks, whatever you'd wear at any beach resort. Everywhere else on the island, modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is expected of both women and men.

Why it exists

Local islands are home to real Maldivian communities living under Islamic custom. The bikini beach is a practical compromise — it lets tourism coexist with local life, giving visitors a genuine beach experience while respecting the island's own norms everywhere else.

Think of it less as a restriction and more as knowing which room you're in — beach mode on the bikini beach, respectful-guest mode everywhere else.
