Is Alcohol Allowed on Local Islands?

3 min read · The Maldives Guide

Short answer: no. Alcohol isn't sold or permitted on inhabited local islands anywhere in the Maldives, by law. This surprises some first-time guesthouse travelers, so it's worth understanding clearly before you book.

Why

Local islands are governed by Maldivian and Islamic law, under which alcohol is prohibited. Resorts and licensed liveaboards operate as separate, leased tourism zones with different rules — which is why alcohol is freely available there, but not on the islands where local communities actually live.

This isn't a loophole or something that varies by island — it applies everywhere on inhabited local islands, without exception.

Can I bring my own?

No. Bringing alcohol into the country at all is restricted, and anything declared or found at customs can be confiscated. This applies regardless of where you're staying.

What if I want both a local island trip and a drink?

This is exactly what our Resort + Local Island Combo solves — spend part of your trip on a local island, then finish at a resort where alcohol is available. Best of both, without compromising on either.
