Maldives Packing Checklist
A tropical island trip doesn't need a complicated packing list — but a few Maldives-specific items are easy to forget until you're already there.
Sun and swim
- Reef-safe sunscreen — many resorts and dive operators now require it to protect coral
- A rash guard or light long-sleeve top for snorkeling, to cut down on reapplying sunscreen
- A wide-brim hat and good sunglasses — the sun is stronger than it feels over water
If you're staying on a local island
- A lightweight cover-up or sarong for walking between the bikini beach and the rest of the island
- Modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) for anywhere off the designated beach
Tech
- A universal adapter — the Maldives generally uses UK-style (type G) plugs at 230V
- A waterproof phone pouch for boat transfers and beach days
- A portable charger — outlets can be limited on some local islands
Health and comfort
- Basic over-the-counter medication, including something for seasickness if you're prone to it — boat transfers can get choppy
- A light jacket or wrap for air-conditioned rooms and evening sea breezes
Documents
- Passport with the validity your airline/entry requirements call for — check current requirements before you fly
- A printed or downloaded copy of your booking confirmation
- Your completed IMUGA immigration form — it's free, done online, and required before arrival
The one thing not to pack: your own alcohol, if any part of your trip includes a local island stay — it can be confiscated at customs.
