Best Time to Visit the Maldives

6 min read · The Maldives Guide

The Maldives is a year-round destination, but "best time" really depends on what you're optimizing for — calm seas, lower prices, or marine life sightings.

SeasonConditionsGood for
Jan – Apr (dry, NE monsoon)Calmer seas, less rain, peak seasonFirst-time visitors, easier boat transfers, highest prices (especially Dec–Mar)
May – Nov (wet, SW monsoon)More rain showers (often brief), more plankton in the waterLower prices, manta ray season in Baa Atoll typically peaking mid-year

If you want the calmest seas and easiest transfers

January through April is generally the most reliable window — also the most expensive, particularly around the Christmas and New Year period.

If you want lower prices and don't mind some rain

May through November brings more frequent rain showers, but they're often short and don't necessarily ruin a day. Resort rates are typically noticeably lower in this window.

"Wet season" in the Maldives usually means brief afternoon showers, not washed-out days — it's a very different picture from monsoon season in many other tropical destinations.

If diving or snorkeling with marine life is the priority

Manta ray sightings at Hanifaru Bay (Baa Atoll) tend to peak during the wet season, while whale shark sightings around Dhigurah happen fairly consistently year-round. See our Diving & Snorkeling page for more on matching your trip to the season.

One more thing to check

Ramadan dates shift each year on the Islamic calendar. It doesn't prevent travel, but restaurant hours and some local island activity may adjust during the holy month — worth checking the dates for your travel year.

Tell us your priorities — price, weather, or marine life — and we'll suggest the right window for your trip.
